Why I Wrote "Am I a Christian?"

God presented the concept of this book-study through my husband. When we were dating, one of my first questions to him was, “Are you a Christian?” I grew to believe his answer of “yes” because he was so knowledgeable of the Bible and was active in his church.

Throughout our marriage, at times I discerned a discontentment within my husband. I questioned why he seemed to be in a battle with himself after most church services and why he had no desire to tell others openly about Jesus.

There were times that I was driven to my knees in prayer for him and had no idea why. Eight years into our marriage, our individual salvations were questioned by someone. I knew I had repented of my sins and accepted Christ as my Savior at the age of fourteen, but I immediately went to God’s Word, where He showed me that it was ok to question my salvation in order to be reminded of my salvation experience.

I was led to “examine” myself further in His Word, and He assured me that I had “the peace of God which surpasses all understanding…” (Philippians 4:7)
My husband did not have that peace. Within a few days he surprised me, tears flowing down his face, and told me God had convicted him and that he was not a Christian. The Holy Spirit drew him to the cross, repentance, forgiveness, salvation, and the peace of Jesus. Now, finally I understood why God had driven me to my knees to pray for my husband for so many years.
Then God revealed His plan to me for this book. (exerpt from Am I a Christian? 2009)

It is my belief that there are many people sitting in our churches, Sunday after Sunday trying to convince themselves that they are a Christian without having repented and accepting Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. I have also seen those who believe they are a Christian simply because they grew up in a Christian home or because they live in America. This breaks my heart, and even more so, breaks the heart of God, who so much wants everyone to come to know His Son Jesus.

This, in a nutshell, is why I wrote “Am I a Christian?”

Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it. ~Habakkuk 2:2
